Dr. Frederick W. and Joyce E. Glass Associate Degree Nursing scholarship

The Dr. Frederick W. and Joyce E. Glass Associate Degree Nursing scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Frederick W. Glass, the first director of the emergency-medicine-residency program at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. It is created by his loving wife Joyce Glass to honor his professional accomplishments.

Dr. Glass began the Emergency Medicine program in 1975. It was one of the first five programs in the country. Dr. Glass’ ability to work well with others was critical in starting the department from scratch. His likeable personality also helped him draw both students and faculty to the program.

Dr. Glass graduated from Wake Forest College where he was the second Demon Deacon mascot. He then attended Bowman Gray School of Medicine. After practicing medicine in Florida, Dr. Glass joined the faculty at Wake Forest School of Medicine in 1973. Dr. Glass thought it took a special type of personality,” to be an emergency-medicine doctor. They “must be an aggressive type, who does not shrink from making decisions on the spot.”

The scholarship is for a second semester student in the Associate Degree Nursing program with the established criteria: (1) applicant’s admission scores (2) prior work in a hospital setting (additional points awarded) and (3) financial need (additional points awarded). It is preferred that the applicant has an interest in Emergency Medicine, but it is not required.

Final selection will be made by the program coordinator for Associate Degree Nursing or his/her designee.
